SIM card in Thailand

There’s a lot to enjoy in Thailand. But how will you share your exciting adventures with friends and family back home without an internet connection? Fear not! We’ve got you covered. In this guide, we’ll show you how to easily get a local SIM card in Thailand so you can stay connected throughout your journey. But first…

Why Get a Thai SIM Card? While most cafes and hotels offer free Wi-Fi, having a local SIM card gives you the freedom to connect wherever you go. Stay active on social media, use maps for navigation, and have access to useful apps without worrying about internet limitations. Plus, with affordable data plans in Thailand, you won’t have to break the bank to enjoy a reliable internet connection.

What NOT to do

Sim cards can easily and expensively be purchased at the airport. They speak good English, give good information and quickly help you activate your sim card. So that’s what we did. As you can se in the picture, it’s a thousand Baht for 30 days with unlimited internet. Sounds like a good deal, until you visit a tech-shop in the city who gives you a better deal for 200 Baht.

So the the cheapest (and still pretty easy) option is to locate the official retail stores. They are normally located in shopping malls but you will see them everywhere once you start to notice them. If you happen to be in Hua Hin for example, you can find severel options at Market Village on the top floor:

So here are some steps you can follow to get a working SIM card in Thailand.

Step 1: Unlock Your Phone (If Required)

So even before you hop on the plane, it can be a good idea to ensure that your phone is unlocked, as this will allow you to use a different SIM card in your phone.

If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, don’t fret! You can contact your carrier and request them to unlock it for international use. It’s frustrating figuring this out after you’ve arrived though, so just a useful first step to help you get SIM card in Thailand

Step 2: Choose Your Service Provider

Once you arrive in Thailand, there is a lot of service providers to choose from. Some of the most popular ones are AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac. We personally went for dtac, but many of our friends recommend AIS. Each offers different plans, coverage, and data packages, so you just got to find what suits you. Ask fellow travelers or locals for recommendations, or visit the service provider’s stores.

Step 3: Prepare Your Documents

Getting a Thai SIM card is easy, but you’ll need to provide some identification. Make sure to carry your passport with you as it is required to register the SIM card. This is a standard procedure for all foreigners purchasing SIM cards in Thailand.

Step 4: Purchase Your SIM Card

Head to the service provider’s store or an authorized retailer and let them know you want to buy a SIM card. They will guide you through the available options and help you pick the best plan for your needs. The process is quick, and you’ll be ready to connect in no time!

Step 5: Top Up Your SIM Card

Once you have your new Thai SIM card, you might need to add credit to it. This is known as “topping up” your SIM card. Most convenience stores and retailers sell top-up cards, or you can easily top up online through the service provider’s app or website.

Step 6: Activate Data Packages (Optional)

To make the most of your local SIM card, activate a data package suitable for your internet usage. Whether you need high-speed data for video calls and streaming or a more budget-friendly package for occasional messaging, there’s an option for everyone.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Stay with Peace of Mind!

Congratulations! You’re now the proud owner of a Thai SIM card, ready to explore the wonders of Thailand without losing touch with the world. From sharing stunning sunset pictures on the islands to navigating bustling city streets, you’re all set to make your trip a memorable one.
